Can't reformat with XP: Computer not reading CD

I'm trying to reformat a Dell 8600 with Windows XP. I did this a couple times, a few years ago, and it worked fine. Now, when I start the process of booting from the CD drive, I can hear the CD spinning, but when I follow the instruction to press any key, it boots from the hard drive. The Dell reinstallation CD is in the drive. It's labeled "Reinstallation CD, Windows XP Home Edition, Including Service Pack 1a."

Something different happened when I tried this a couple days ago. I got this message: “Please insert the disk labeled Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD into Drive A: Press Enter when ready.” The CD was in the drive, but nothing happened when I pressed Enter.

Maybe this is a hardware problem, but I know the D drive works. At least I can read and open files from CDs just fine.

    Any ideas?

You might want to make an exact copy of your Windows XP disk on another machine, if you have one handy.
Or simply clean the CD with warm soap and water and try to boot to it again 3 or 4 more times.

I washed the CD with soap and water, and it worked! I was able to reformat the hard drive and install XP. Thanks!
