Installed XP w SP1a; can't get SP3 or newer version of IE

I reformatted a Dell 8600 and reinstalled Windows XP. I need to get SP3, updated drivers, and a newer version of IE, but the IE6 that's installed now won't work with the MS website, and often crashes when I open it. Windows Update won't work either.

I have a Windows 7 computer, and I tried to get XP SP3 on that so I could install it on the XP computer, but I can't get the individual version of SP3, just the IT version for installing on a network, which the site tells me not to use.

I downloaded the IE8 installer with the Win 7 computer and tried to install it on the XP computer, but it won't install - I get an "entry point" error message.

I'm stuck, and I'm guessing that SP3 is the key, Any suggestions on how to get it?

Go ahead and use what Microsoft calls the network version. It is just the full version of SP3 and will be larger than what you would download with Windows Update. I've found that I've had better success with that than using Windows Update.

    Joe-

That worked. I downloaded SP3 on my Win 7 machine, then installed it on the XP machine. Thanks for the advice.
