Installing Windows XP Upgrade In Multiboot Config

I would like to install Windows XP Professional in a multiboot configuration on my computer (a Dell Dimension XPS T550) so I can have a choice of booting either Windows 98, Windows XP, or Red Hat Linux 7.2.

In order to save money, I would like to buy the Windows XP Professional Upgrade rather than the full version of XP. Will the XP installation routine allow me to install this to a separate logical drive or will I be forced into an "upgrade" of Windows 98, which I do not want to do?

You can do a clean install using the upgrade. The only difference between the upgrade and the Full is that the upgrade will search your machine for a valid OS for the upgrade. If you are using a boot manager to boot to the different "C" drives, you will need to have your Windows 98 CD handy so when XP installer can NOT find a valid OS, you will need to place CD in reader and tell XP where to look.

When installing WinXP, you will need to select "Clean" install and in the "Advance" panes select "Allow me to tell where to install. The use of a boot manager you are going to need another prime partition set up to be a bootable partition.
I do not use any of the likes of Linux, so I do not use a third party boot manager. I use the NTloader and boot.ini. This allows me to boot to a Win 9x on the C drive and any Nt, 2K or XP on any other drive letter I want. This also allows me to have access to all of the drives from any OS.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks a lot Dave. This means I can just go ahead and buy the upgrade. I was also wondering if using the Windows 98 CD trick would still work with Windows XP Upgrade process and you answered that too. I'm expecting to whip out fdisk or Partition Magic and create a another logical partition on my first hard drive for XP.

I am planning to use the version of GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) that comes with Red Hat Linux 7.2 as a boot manager. I've reviewed about 20 pages or so of Grub documentation and it looks like I can get it to boot 98/XP/Red Hat just fine. The product is able to hide and unhide partitions and it can get the chain loading process started for Windows XP. I'll let you know if I get this to work in real life.

I wasn't planning to do all this, since I'm heavily involved in Linux, but Visual Studio.NET bit me and I feel a strong need to learn C# and the NET framework. I have the Visual Studio release candidate on DVD and I understand it won't install under Windows 98.

Tx for the note about GRUB. I have been using Partition Magic on a multi-boot 98SE, XP Pro, RH71.1 system. Only issue is to make sure LILO is on first sector of Linux Ext boot partition (ie. not in MBR).

Was on RH site last night, and RH7.2 looks like a nice release. Well better go grab some ISO's and the Grub documentation. I also want to test Mandrake 8.1 after seeing some good comments about it, so, I think my DSL is going to be busy for a while.

I would check that there isn't a licensing issue, since, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, an upgrade from Win98 to Win XP means you can no longer legally use the Win98 code.

Doug, I will check into this by asking for a copy of the applicable End-Use License Agreement (EULA), but I do not think this is a problem. Since I paid properly for the Windows 98 license I'm entitled to the use of the code. I've already searched the Microsoft KB for a copy of the EULA without success.
