    Windows 8 update problem

Please disregard this post. I did further checking at Microsoft and it appears that they don't know what to do about this problem other than to hide the update. This is what I did. Hopefully I won't see this update again. One of the Microsoft support suggestions was to do a complete reinstall of Windows. This seems like drastic overkill to solve a relatively simple problem. Sorry I took up your time, but perhaps the information I received may help someone else who has/had the problem.

Hi: I have my computer set to automatic updates--they are downloaded and installed automatically. I had reason to look at my updates and noticed that I received the same update three times in one day. Upon further investigation I noticed that this update has been downloaded and installed more than 100 times since I installed Windows 8 in November. Here are the details of the update:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242)

    Installation date: ‎2/‎22/‎2013 9:21 AM

    Installation status: Succeeded

    Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified leading to MFC application vulnerability in DLL planting due to MFC not specifying the full path to system/localization DLLs. You can protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Before I get lost in the maze of windows support, I wonder if one of you good folks might have some idea as to why this particular update continues to be downloaded and installed. From what I can see, each download appears to be identical. Any help would be appreciated.

Try downloading the fix from Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update and installing bby itself. If that does not work see the troubleshooting steps for Windows 8 at Windows Update or Microsoft Update repeatedly offers the same update.

Thanks, Joe. I I used the second of your two references and found the Microsoft Fixit for windows update. I ran it and it said it repaired a problem with Windows Update. We'll see what happens.

If Joe's suggestion doesn't work, try uninstalling Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 and installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package if its not already installed.
