'S' Can't be deleted (Word 97 sr2)

I have a Capital "S" left over from a previous edit in the header of my document.
I can't delete it, move it or go past it. It is the last character in the header.

I have never seen this before.

Please help. Thinking up a header that ends in an "S" is an undesirable workaround.

If it's a single section document, your best bet might be to copy everything but the last paragraph mark, then paste it into a new document and save over the original. If it's a multi-section document, and the S only appears in only one section, try deleting the section break at the end of that section, then re-inserting it. If it's a multi-section document and the S appears in all sections, try the first idea above. If that doesn't fix it, remove all the section breaks, then copy everything but the last paragraph mark and paste into a new document.

Out of curiosity, why don't you attach a copy of the first page with the header to see what it is?

I would but I can't get it below 118 KB.

I did fix problem but what a pain.
I had to copy content except last paragraph into a new doc.
Then I had to do that a second time into a third doc to get rid of the problem

I don't know why I didn't think of that.

Well it behaves the same for me - I can't delete it either. I wondered if it might be something to do with Track Changes which in my experience with Word 97 can do some pretty bizarre things. And sure enough you had tracked changes. But turning on the option to view all the changes didn't as I hoped make it possible to delete it.

It could just be that somehow the document has got corrupted and the solution of starting a new one and pasting the text in is best.

Re: 'S' Can't be deleted (Word 97 sr2)

since my original post I discovered the Section break can't be deleted either.

Also interesting is that I had to paste it into two successive documents to clear the problem.
The first paste carried the problem with it. But the second didn't.

I lost a lot of formatting in the process but that is my own fault for formatting on the fly.

Re: 'S' Can't be deleted (Word 97 sr2)

Hi Marc:
OK, here's what I found:
1. It is part of the first section break. By switching to normal view, you can select & delete the section break & the "S" & the section's first page header is deleted.

2. You can also get rid of it by placing the cursor inisde the header & clicking the "same as previous" button on the header/footer toolbar.

3. The "S" is either in a textbox or frame, I can't tell which. You can select the "S" by double clicking it, however. But you can't delete it straight away. If you select it & go to Insert/Text Box (or Insert/Frame), you can then click properties for the frame & remove it. You can then remove the S. The same is true with selecting it & then clicking insert text box.

Still, you can't select the text box or frame in which it resides directly. At this point, I'm not sure if there is some section corruption, something that was embedded & converted from another format, or what.

Did Word crash on several ocassions while you worked on this? I notice that there appear to be several recoveries from .asd files & that this was a 30 page document.

Re: 'S' Can't be deleted (Word 97 sr2)

Word froze twice while I was working on it and I had to give it the old Microsoft Salute [Ctrl] [Alt] [Delete].
Task manager showed that Word had 100% of CPU locked up.
The document was worked on by a consultant who used a previous document of mine for a model. They may have simply modified my old document rather than starting new. They had the file. The old document could hve been that long. I have no idea what happened to it there.

When I received it from them I turned on the track changes tool. It was off when they emailed me the file.
It hasn't been more than 16 pages since I got it.

What is an ".asd" file? and How did you figure that out?

Hi Marc:

It's an autosave (or autorecover in Word 97) file (.asd) that Word creates every x minutes (specified in Tools/Options/Save.

It's deleted unless you crash. The reason I know that, as well as your last name, that the document was for contract bidding, etc. is I opened it under the option "Recover all text".

That's incredible, I had no idea you could do that.
It raises some important security issues I had never thought of.

learning that trick is adequate compensation for the hassle I went to to clean up the document.

How can one purge all historical background from a file?
That is can, I fix a file so that only the data necessary to make the text appear in its final form is transmitted in the file.

Check out <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=wrd&Number=61904&page=&view =&sb=&o=&vc=1>this thread on "metadata"- which is the hidden data you're talking about. Also check Microsoft (and probably Woody's archive) on the same topic.

If you view a Word doc in Notepad, you can see lots- probably similar to what you can see from the "recover text" option.

You can purge the "save" history using this cloning macro. I am not aware of any other way. Note that this macro preserves pretty much everything else, but does not reattach to the original template (if it was not Normal.dot).
