Red face Windows XP Pro SP3 "Error number: 0x800A0046"

Upon either clicking "Windows Update" or directly at the site, I've tried updating using IE 6, 7 & 8 unsuccessfully. I'm using Windows XP Pro w/SP3 . I continue to recieve the Error number: 0x800A0046 everytime I'm at the update site. I've followed all of the knowledge bases suggestions, after initially making sure my "userdata persistence" was enabled (which it has been everytime.) I'm running as administrator & went down the list in the knowledgebase of solutions with the same result, like an endless loop!

Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance ;-)

Thanks for the quick reply Jerry & yes I did complete all 4 methods. Also, Fix-It was run but at the very end says it encountered a problem (3 times) or chances for that.

Download and run a Malwarebytes full scan - www.malwarebytes.org Malware can hobble Windows updates.

Thank you Jerry. Malwarebytes did find a few files of type pup.tiny something or another. I'm going to see if automatic updates works, as IE is worthless there. I've also noticed that some versions of XP are no longer supported. I've SP3 & didn't see any reference to that, though it's my understanding that it will be supported into the following year.
