Dumbed down thesaurus (2000 and 2002)

In a recent Woody's Watch there was a comment on MS dumbing down the thesaurus in the newer versions of Office.

Is it possible to "appropriate" the Office 97 Thesaurus and or dictionary and force/allow Office 2000 or 2002 to use it?

    Thanks!

It's not so easy - different versions of Office use different kinds of libraries (DLL's) and datafiles (LEX files). For example, for American English thesaurus Office 97 uses msgren32.dll and msgr_en.lex; and Office 2000 uses msgr2en.dll and msgr2en.lex respectively. What you can do - create custom dictionary file (other than default custom.dic), say, curse.dic, and put all words you want to add into it. Than you can copy this file to another computer, use it after upgrading etc. By creating separate dictionary file you can easily configure Office applications accept or not accept curse words and switch between accepting and not accepting. Click Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar tab | Dictionaries button. From here you can create new dictionary, add/remove it from Office etc.
