    Register OEM version of Win7

    Hi,
I have an older laptop with Windows Vista. I want to buy Windows 7, Home Premium or better. Being pretty cheap, the prices on OEM versions look to be the most reasonable ... Here's my question: If I buy an OEM Windows 7 install disk, will I have any problems registering it with Microsoft? I'm sure that dozens, if not hundreds of Lounge members know about this ... Thanks, the Old_Geezer

Why not purchase an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7? It would be cheaper than buying the regular version.

If you aren't worried about keeping what's currently on the laptop, you can do the upgrade as a clean install. The one thing that makes it an "upgrade" (and therefore qualifies for the upgrade cheaper price) is that it finds an acceptable copy of Windows installed on your laptop. Once you start the upgrade and it verifies that you have a valid copy of Windows installed, you can then tell it to install in the same folder (e.g. C:\Windows) that the current install of Windows is in. Doing that will overwrite Vista with Windows 7. It will also leave all the data on your computer intact. (You'll have to reinstall all of your programs.)

Or, you could tell it to format the drive, and you'll have a completely clean install.
