    XP-64 recovery console

    XP-64

I have a blue screen config file issue on a XP-64 computer running an AMD 64 processor (worked fine for years)

I have the original OS CD, license, and administrator’s password

Changed the hardware and three “boots” afterwards got a blue screen

I know how to use recovery console on XP32 but 64 is different.

So I went Microsoft’s Support knowledge base. You first need to select a product and XP-64 is not even listed as a product. The regular XP instructions specifically exclude XP-64.

Fine I’ll go to the MS “forum” and ask a good semeritan. Same problem, you need to first select an OS and xp-64 is not a choice.

Searched the WEB, so far no luck. Checked some reference books, can’t find one on 64

So here’s the question. Know where I can find documentation on XP-64 recovery console?

Why not reinstall? I’m retired this was a work engineering computer that I kept on retirement. There are engineering work programs that I can’t reinstall

    See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

It has instructions for installing the XP 64 bit recovery console.

You're smug and wrong in equal measure. that link is for 32 bit XP, not 64 bit. You're a moderator ???

I apologize if I came off smug. I had no intention of being so.

From the link I gave you:
To install the Recovery Console, follow these steps: 1.Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive.
2.Click Start, and then click Run.
3.In the Open box, type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD drive. For Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type d:\amd64\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD drive.
4.A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears. The Windows Setup Dialog Box describes the Recovery Console option. To confirm the installation, click Yes.

Did not seem smug at all to me.

polychromeuganda, not a good start to your posting on the Lounge. The post by Jerry was factual and straight to the point, not smug at all. And yes he is a very experienced PC user and a Moderator, so please confine your comments to the facts.
