No Sound on Audio Devices after XP Installed

I am using an EMachines E4252, with a MCP61SM-GM motherboard. When purchased, the machine came with Vista, but i got rid of that and have installed XP Pro SP3.

After the installation i got no sound and the 'no mixer devices installed' error, so i installed what i thought was the right driver, Gateway Realtek HD Audio Driver. However, i am not getting any sound from any audio devices (speakers or headphones), even after installation of the driver. Everything says it's working ok, i don't get the mixer devices error, but just no sound.

FYI - in Device Manager, the following devices are listed under Sound, Video, and Game controllers:

    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Devices
    Realtek High Definition Audio
    Video Codecs

    Can anyone help?

    Peter

Here is the place to go to download the drivers for your motherboard:

    http://support.gateway.com/support/d...param=4006233R

As you can see, they are all for Vista. I believe that's where your problem is.

If you can get more specific info as to the manufacturer of the audio chip, you might be able to track it down that way.

Also, you might try doing a Windows update, and then look in the "optional" / hardware updates. There might be an audio update there. Sometimes you get lucky and this fixes it.

Here is an excellent posting on sound issues:

Perhaps your answer can be found there.

    Thx Mr Jim

I already tried the drivers from that site, and they didn't work - yes, probably because they are for Vista. Can you point me in the direction of where i might find specific information about the manufacturer of the audio chip? I've tried searching for info using Emachines E4252, the motherboard name and the gateway site itself but to no avail.

Didn't find an answer from that post either, none of those issue apply

Is it possible that the sound chip on this motherboard will only work with Vista?

    Thanks
    Peter

there are several places that ms diddles audio

you need them all set right

have not done it for several years so dont recall them all offhand
and if you have skype that also effs things audio and needs to be changed too

best site i found for help was the audacity forum
you can probably find the questions and answers there many times over

i may have posted the various areas that need diddling a few years back
so searching their site for keywords that relate to your problem should pop up the answers quickly

one is in the realtek panel
if you see a loudspeaker on the tool bar click and also try right click
    see where you go to
make sure the right things are checked on and off
    that may fix your problem

you may be able to do something from start/controlpanel/sounds etc

i recall a couple of other places relating to hardware and software that had their hands in the pot too

if you have skype you will need to find the ms locations to change it

    Hi Speedball

No joy with the Realtek panel or control panel, and I'm not using Skype.

Can you give me the address for the audacity site?

    Thanks
    Peter
