    Duplicate workbooks??!!?? (Excel '97)

I was working on a workbook this morning, everything working as expected.

I come to open it this afternoon and when I open the file, two copies are opened, one called abc.xls:1 and the other abc.xls:2. When I close down and save, both close at the same time. I have a look in Explorer and only the original abc.xls is shown, no sign of ~1 or ~2.

Can anyone tell me what is going on here?

Check the Windows menu and see how many views of the same workbook do you have.

I guess somewhere somehow you viewed the workbook twice, by using the New Window command under the Window menu. Close one of them, and save the workbook and you should be fine.

If you can't close one window, try and see if you have saved a copy of the same workbook as a Backup, this may explain things.

    Wassim, thanks for the reply.

In the Windows menu, there are two copies of the same workbook, one called abc.xls:1 and one called abc.xls:2.

When I try to close just one, both close.

I've checked in 'Save As, Options' to see if there is a check-mark for making a backup - there isn't.

I had a look in the Xlstart folder too, but nothing out of the ordinary there.

    Fish,

You have 2 windows open to thesame workbook. Go to Window, Arrange and select Tiled and you will see both windows at once. Just click on the x in one of the window's title bars and it should close, leaving you with one window which you can now maximise.

You're quite right, of course. I'm just baffled how this setting would survive following an Excel shutdown and re-start? Any idea's how I did this in the first place? I -think- it was a slip 'o' the mouse.

    Tks for the help.

You probably hit Window, New without even knowing it - a slip 'o' the mouse as you say. The windows view of a workbook is saved with the file.
