Resource use when generating documents from database

Background: We have a customised CRM package for a our client and work database (SQL). The database is made up of clients, their details, their contacts, their expertise and work done to ensure they do what they say they do (scope). The scope documents are made up of scope parts (very much like the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes). From the database we generate what we call "scope" documents. These are the capabilities of our clients that have been verified through assessment, they can be up to 50 pages long.
We generate these documents using templates we have created out of Word, initially MSO 2003, and now using under MSO 2010.

Problem: When generating the scope documents the time taken can be very long (up to 1 hour). During the generation a Word dialogue box frequently pops up to notify the user that it is using a specific template. If the user attempts to use their computer whilst this process is happening, they run the risk of inserting whatever they are working on into the scope document, particularly if they are copying and pasting which they do a lot of. As you can image the user gets a wee bit annoyed with this as they will have to go through the whole process again.

Has anyone come across this type problem?
    cheers

Can you run the process hidden or under a different user account?

    David hi
As a workaround we have supplier laptops that the Admin ladies RDP to so they can generate the scope documents in the background while they continue with other work. Not ideal but increases productivity
    cheers

    I almost suggested that approach.
