    AOL

Is there a way to Block AOL Instant massager and AOL Express messenger on a Windows 2000 network system? We have 3 separate classrooms and would like to isolate each shut off. The other step we are looking for is to fully shut off the Internet per room. And last, to shut off email per room to avoid students to send attachments of their assignments.

If you shut off the Internet, AOL Instant messenger and mail will not work, so let's start there. One way to do this is with a firewall, prohibiting all outgoing traffic to the Internet. For example, if each room is on a different subnet, you could block by subnet. Where exactly the choke point is, I'm not sure. (We have our firewall just inside the router.) If you are limited to using the Windows 2000 server to control this, perahps you could configure each PC to use that as a proxy server. It's beyond my knowledge how this would work.

Thanks for the effort, Jeff. Found a site to block the AOL Instant messaging-- 1 down 3 to go--slowly but surely, we will get there.
