USB 3.0 issue - Windows does not recognize the device

I have a brand new Gateway NE1b laptop. AMD processor. The USB 3.0 port does not work with USB 3.0 devices. USB 2.0 devices work just fine in the port. I have seen on other forums where people had problems when upgrading to Windows 8. They had to go back to their Windows 7 drivers to get the USB 3.0 port to work. Gateway support is no help. They want me to send the laptop in to get a new part. I am sure it is just the Windows driver causing the problem. Microsoft won't help because it is an OEM version of Windows 8. This is not a big deal, just a perplexing annoyance.

This almost sounds like a driver issue. Perhaps the Gateway web site would have some USB3 drivers you can grab.

My Corsair flash drive worked fine in my son's computer and his Kingston worked fine in mine, so we traded. I tried a couple other USB 3.0 devices and they both worked just fine. Windows on my computer just did not like the Corsair drive. It worked fine in the USB 2.0 port but not the 3.0. A mystery wrapped in an enigma.

USB 3.0 seems to be a bit buggy. I see people post about problems with USB 3.0 at WD quite often. Try uninstalling the USB 3.0 driver and reinstall. It sometimes get corrupted by installing other devices. Logitec is frequently mentioned as a problem maker.

I just received a Seagate expansion drive from Amazon today and it works fine with the USB 3.0 port. I also read in the patch update section of the Windows Secrets newsletter that Microsoft just sent out a patch for Windows 7 USB 3.0 driver. If they are still playing with getting USB 3.0 to work in Windows 7, there is a good possibility that the Windows 8 drivers are still a work in progress also.

My son took the Corsair drive that started this post to work and 3 of his co-workers tried it on there laptops and it worked fine on all of them. They were all Intel based laptops while mine is AMD based. Apparently the drivers are different for AMD and Intel.
