    Easy CD Creator 5 installation

Does anyone have any recent experience installing Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 on Win2000? In order to upgrade to WinXP Pro, I have to upgrade an OEM ECDC 4 to version 5. The manual says nothing about installation other than popping the CD into the drive. I queried Roxio tech support about the advisability of uninstalling the old version first, and they sent me an installation procedure from hell:
Uninstall old version and remove all shared files.
Search and rename a list of dll and sys files.
Delete adaptec folders from program files
Remove certain keys from the registry (!)
Disable all icons on start bar.
Copy contents of ECDC 5 to folder on desktop.
Reboot in safe mode and install.

None of this is mentioned in the manual or on their web site, yet on repeated query they say that this procedure is necessary to remove conflicting dll's. Is it only me, or what is going on here?

Re: Easy CD Creator 5 installation

I recently upgraded to WinXP. Knowing Easy CD Creator 4.0 would not work I uninstalled it before upgrading by just using "add/remove" from the Control Panel. After upgrading I bought Easy CD Creator 5.0 and also went into the Roxio Update page and downloaded their upgrade to 5.02b and their WinXP upgrade. I then installed Easy CD Creator from the CD but as instructed by the Roxio page DID NOT REBOOT, then installed 5.02b and DID NOT REBOOT, then installed WinXP upgrade THEN REBOOTED. After the reboot it then worked perfectly. But I also had to replace my HP 7200i CD Writer with an up to date and WinXP compatible LG 8160B writer. The HP Writer worked as a CD drive in WinXP but no way would Easy CD Creator 5.02b recognise it.

I don't mean to be an alarmist, or the kind of person that causes a 'virus' by spreading false rumors unknowingly, but I happened across this article recently:
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/18741.html
It made me think twice about getting Easy CD Creator 5 (which I can't afford right now anyway) even though I don't have Windows 2000 at home, where I would be using it. But I also feel uneasy about possibly knowing something significant and not saying anything (even if this may be a bit late).

    Hopefully it's a moot point, but I just had to open my big keyboard. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Yes, I quickly found out that Take Two was bad news when I had Windows 2000. No better with Windows XP, you have to manually avoid installing it. The other applications within Easy CD Creator 5 work fine with Windows XP.
