print collated pages (Word 2000, SR-1, HPLaserjet 4)

I do not often print multiple copies of documents at home, but last night I did. I wanted to print 15 copies of a 6 page document. I entered 15 as the # of copies and made sure the collate box was checked. Instead it printed 15 copies of page 1, 15 copies of page 2, etc. I do not know if the problem is with Word or with the HP driver.

This morning I renamed my "normal.dot" forcing Word to create a new normal template. The problem is still there.

I would appreciate any insight as to what is happening and how to fix it.

    Thanks in advance,
    Georgette

    Hi Georgette:

Did you also tell Word to print only page 6? You left that part out of the question. What happens if you try to print only one page?

    Hi Georgette:

That's the problem. You told Word to print all the pages. You have to change that to only page 6; then you'll get 15 copies of page 6.

    Hope this helps.

    I don't want 15 copies of page 6, I want 15 copies of a 6 page long document...:>)

    Hi Georgette:

I'm sorry. I misread the problem. Then you've done it correctly. It could be a driver; I've had problems with HP drivers before. Make sure you have the latest.

First, I'd try going to Tools/Options/Print & untick background printing & see if that helps.

However, I'd also try going to File/Print... Untick the collate box & print a couple of pages. Then go back & retick the box.

    Hope this helps.

I tried all of your suggestions but upgrading the driver... sad to say, none of them worked.

How do you tell the date/version of the printer driver you currently have installed? Do you have to delete the HP 4 printer first then install the driver that you download from HP, or is it smart enough to sense that this may be an upgrade to the driver?

Thanks in advance for all of your help,
    Georgette

What Word used to do is send the print job 6 times. Perhaps more recently it is instructing the printer to collate the job, and for some reason, that is not working? This might be controlled by a setting in the driver that tells Word the printer can collate on its own. Check the "Mopier" setting and, if it is checked, uncheck it and see if that solves the problem. (Or, alternately see if the printer's mopier features are turned off and turn them on, assuming the printer has enough RAM.)

    Hi Georgette:
In Win 98, go to Start Menu/Settings/Printers. Double click your printer. On the Printer menu, choose Properties. I have an old HP, & on my details tab, there is a button for new driver. From there you can install a new driver & you don't need to delete anything. But, of course, you first have to download the driver.

Before I commit to something like this, I back up my configuration so that when I screw up (sometimes I don't <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>), I don't end up worse than when I started.

    Hope this helps.

Go to HP's web site and download the latest version of the software for printer.

    Install the software.
Uninstall the printer ONLY if the HP software documentation instructs you too.

Not all printer drivers allow such collating with all printers.

The driver version(s) are printed when you print a test page.
    One other thing to check:
Properties > Advanced: Have you selected the Enable Advanced Printing features?

    Georgette,
Did you ever get this problem resolved last fall -- with Word not collating properly? I'm asking because we are having the same problem here. Did a different print driver, or any of the other suggestions, ever work?

Since I do not print multiple collated copies often, I did not pursue this problem. I don't remember getting notification of the last 3 Lounge responses to the question, either.... hummmm!

I believe that I downloaded the "updated" printer driver from HP and, when I went to install it, Windows XP told me that it was not a "Microsoft blessed" driver.

    Rather that mess up what I have, I decided to leave it alone... <img src=/S/read.gif border=0 alt=read width=19 height=33>

    Good Luck,
    Georgette
