Word Perfect DAT file import (2k SR1)

I need to import a secondary data file from WordPerfect (.DAT) into Access but first I need to bring it into Word, convert it to Word and save it, bring it into Excel and then to Access. This is better right?
My Word won't install the conversion file, and I can't get the fle to be recognized. Any ideas?

Was the .DAT file a WordPerfect-format file or a text file? Adding a more recognizable extension (e.g., .WPD or .TXT) probably would help Word get the details right.

If Word is refusing to install the WordPerfect converters, what error do you get?

If it's a delimited text file, Excel is quite good at figuring those out (Data, Get External Data, I believe).

Re: Word Perfect DAT file import (2k SR1)

WP .DAT files are usually straight WP file format (the same format from WPWin 6.x to 10). It is the file that WP uses for its merge data. Unlike Word where the data file is a table, each record as a row, WP seperates each record by page breaks. This results in a pile of rubbish when it is imported into Word.

Your best bet if you still have WP is to do a WP merge into a tablesave the file and then import that into Word.

I recall there was someone out in Internet land who had some Word templates for importing but I'm not sure where. Have you tried the Word FAQ site?
