data validation list depends on cell

    Hi,

I'm trying to create a data validation list whose entries depend on another cell.

For example, if A1 is not blank, I want the list (say in B1) to have Y and N. But if A1 is blank, I just want the list to have N (or somehow I could pre-populate B1 with N and not allow the drop down to appear for a potential change to Y); in other words, Y is only allowable if A1 is not blank but the user does not have to choose Y.

I've played around with Custom Validation but can't seem to find how to enter a formula that would choose the proper list depending on the value (or its length) in A1.

    TIA

    Fred,

What you need is a formula to select the appropriate list.

    For Example: =IF(ISBLANK(A1),List1,List2)
This depends on two Named Ranges being List1 {Sheet1!$E$2} and List2 {Sheet1!$F2:F3}.

    Thanks RG.

I was using the "Custom" choice in Allow. I didn't think you could put a formula in for other choices under Allow.
