XP PRO won't activate a repaired installation

A friend bought over his XP Pro with a reboot looping problem,
After trying a dozen things I still couldn't get out of that looping.

So I bit the bullet and did the 'over-the-top' inplace reinstall
from the CD, (Following Fred's Instuctions).... after all the
install ran it changed to a black screen with MS-XP logo and
under that it said "Please Wait".... Well after 2 days of "WAITING"
I shut it down and tried to reboot, only to get an alert window:

"This Windows needs to be activated before you can login. Do
you want to activate windows now?" (YES/NO buttons)

Also in the bottom rt corner is a MS genuine Logo stating:
This windows is not activated.... Even thou I've clicked YES
time after time.... it never does it... it just brings up a blue or
black wallpaper and a large photo, BUT no start button/desktop
icons or taskbar... no right click options.. nothing.

I ran an AVG Boot Disk... CLEAN
Tried Hiren's boot disk and tried to load in "Mini-Windows"
    FAILED! TWICE!

YES! I could wipe out the drive and do a clean install, BUT
    then they'll lose all their emails/banking info/photos/etc./etc.

How do I get it activated?

You might have to contact MS by phone. They are usually very accommodating. Explain the situation and they will help with a new activation code. This MS Support article should help.

I've gone thru at least 15 pages past that article and can't get a phone number out of them.
I did manage to d/l sp3, but of course it's useless until I get into windows.

How to activate Windows XP by phone

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows XP by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start > All Programs >Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows.

    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.

    3. Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement > Back > Next.

    4. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box:

      Notes:

      • The telephone number you see in Step 2 will differ based on the location you select in Step 1.

      • You will be reading the unique installation ID you see in Step 3 to the completely-voice-automated Customer Service Representative, one section at a time.

      • The completely-voice-automated Customer Service Representative will then read back a long code that you will be typing into the boxes in Step 4, one section at a time.

    5. When that's all done, click Next.

    6. Once activation is complete and you see:

You have successfully activated your copy of Windows

that's it, click OK and you're done.

I guess my explaining the screen wasn't clear enough.
This is "ALL" I see. (Clicking "YES/NO" makes no difference.)
BUT! Thanks to that picture... I 'did' get the phone number
    to call them.

You can call that number if you like but, unless you have that unique code up on your screen under Step 3 to read to the automated voice at Microsoft, you may be wasting your time.

OK, We'll find out on Monday when I can be sitting in front of the machine, "BUT" if I can't get
to a 'real' person, then it bring us back to the original question as to how I get past that screen
or make it activate the OS?

(Side Note: Loaded Hiren's BootCD and tried to load it's 'mini-windows' and it's failed every time.
burning a new copy to see if it's a disk error problem.)

The automated voice mail validation won't work but you should get an option to talk to a real person who should be able to help as long as you have a legal copy.
