I made an Image of Win 8, then installed Win 8.1 Preview directly over Win 8, keeping all settings and files. I had to reinstall AVG (Beta V2014, V2013 had compatibility issues, and LastPass password manager). There were also a few updates that I installed.

I searched to find out how to find out how to boot to desktop and other navigation things:

On StartScreen type Taskbar and choose Taskbar and Navigation. On the Navigation tab, make your selections. These are mine:

    TaskbarNavigation.jpg

Also a problem with Reply Box. Only seems to use the top area. Difficult to see what else I typed. If I enlarge or decrease size of Reply box, changes briefly, then switches back to small area when I start typing again.

Sorry cannot post screen shot. Only allows me to pick one.

This will pose a significant problem for me. This may be caused by IE 11. I will have to investigate some of the changes. I already turned off Enhanced Protection Mode as it was disabling some of my add-ons.

This problem is only present on the Lounge. It is NOT present on 4 other Forums I participate on.

Ted, are you still using classic shell or Start 8 on Windows 8.1? Curious to know if they still work.

I had the small Reply window (box), too, last night. Now, right here, it is normal. Or maybe, it was another Forum where it was small; not absolutely certain... I'll check others, soon.

One can, also, reach that NEW Navigation tab by Rt Clking on Taskbar > Properties.

    Cheers,
    Drew

I have Start8 installed but cannot seem to get it to replace the new Start Button. I can configure it, but it does not seem to be working. I suspect the developers will have to do some rewriting to get them to work properly again.

This darn small Reply Window is really frustrating, enough that I might just restore Win 8 until someone figures out the problem. I can basically only see 2 lines of each post I am typing. I did make an Image of Win 8.1 so if I restore Win 8, I can turn around and Restore 8.1 when this is resolved.

edit: Well combined with this problem, in my other forums I have to use photo bucket to post images and IE 11 would not allow this. I'm just too tired tonight, so I restored Win 8. Perhaps when someone figures out how to get these couple of things working I will restore Win 8.1 and try again.

    Updated StartisBack last night.
Their website claims they will have a working start menu for 8.1 in the future. Existing licenses will be good to go.

I suspect we will see similar things from Classic Shell and Start8. It just may take some time.

    Ted,

Try running the site in Compatibility Mode. You might have a full Reply window, again. Did the trick for myself, @ any rate.

    Cheers,
    Drew

I now have Windows 8.1 running as a VM. A few of the changes people may find appealing.

I am now running Windows 8.1 as a VM. No, nobody got the old (Windows 7) start menu (back). But, there are a few things people did want that they probably will like, well maybe they will... some are hard to please.

    1. Can be told to boot to Desktop.
    2. Can toggle between Start & All Applications screens
    3. Can make the Applications display by Name.
    4. Can have applications show (1st) instead of Start.
    5. Shutdown & Restart can be found on the Power Users menu
    6. Some of the navigation may be felt to be generally more appealing.
    7. Having consistent background across all screens is nice.
    8. A start button on the Taskbar.
    9. Not a slew of Tiles on Start; things, instead, can, still, be told to be there.
    10. 4 digit PIN to sign-in.
    11. Open APPs on the Switcher Bar are labeled

    Cheers,
    Drew

G'day Medico. I just downloaded a new update for Start8 for my Win 8.0.
Perhaps it will fix your issue with the new start button in Win8.1

Next time I restore Win 8.1 I will try to see if there is a new STart8. I had the latest edition as far as I was aware.

OK, I restored Win 8.1. I see Compatibility Mode is different as is the F12 Developer Tools. I added the Lounge to the list of Compatibility View Settings in the Tools tab. Seems to have fixed the Reply Box problem. Thanks for that.

I uninstalled, then reinstalled Start8. No difference. I suspect Start8 will have to be recoded to allow it to take over for the new Start Button.

Stardock has alerted me to a Start8 beta but I have not had the chance to try it out.

    You're welcome, Ted.

    Cheers,
    Drew

You guys should start a separate thread for discussion about Start8, Classic Shell & all that sort of stuff, the same as other Forums.

Exclamation Best Practice Reminder for Betas!!

It seems, from some of what I read, this needs be mentioned, again...

Right now we have Windows 8.1 Preview available. IT IS A BETA!

Once it goes RTM, it will be pushed out to Users who, already, have Windows 8 via Windows Updates later this summer. Until then...

DO NOT upgrade (or overwrite) your Windows 8 w/ the 8.1 Preview. DO NOT replace your Windows 8 w/ Windows 8.1 Preview.

Only install Windows 8.1 Preview on a spare box, as a dual-boot or as a virtual machine in Hyper-V on your Windows 8 host machine.

    Cheers,
    Drew

Thanks Rich. It works great! Start8 beta is now installed on Win 8.1 and is installed in place of the Win 8.1 Start Button on the Taskbar. You must be a Start8 registered user in order to qualify for the free download.

I have started my own thread with details on my now dual boot Win 8 and Win 8.1, both connected to my data drive.
