    IE-8 Creating Secret Tracking Files

IE-8 on Windows XP SP3 is creating the following hidden folders and files:

    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\IECompatCache\index.dat
    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\IETldCache\index.dat
    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\PrivacIE\index.dat

The index files are all different, and contain URLs I have visited in the last four years, and many URLs I have never visited, many with eastern european names. There are also many blocks of upper ASCII characters.

My desktop with IE-8 and XP does not have these files. What evil program is doing this?

    Thanks

I believe those are created by IE's Compatibility View List: Description of the Compatibility View list in Windows Internet Explorer 8

I don't think there's anything evil about them, but you should be able to clear the lists and turn off updates by following these instructions if you wish to do so:

    Compatibility View (Internet Explorer 8)

    Bruce,

I turned off updates as suggested, but the IETldCache and PrivacIE are still updating. I uninstalled Google Desktop earlier in the week, so these files should not be coming from that. (Google was using 5 GB of memory.) The file formats in notepad look quite similar. Thanks for your suggestions.
