    Question cd drive letter missing

I have a cd rom drive and cd/dvd writer drive. Drive letters were "D" and "E". I say were because they have disappeared under my computer. Hardware under system shows them enabled but not working with yellow. What could have happened and how do I get back. Thanks

Somehow it appears the drivers have been corrupted. You can try to reinstall the drivers. If Windows will not find the appropriate drivers, you can try to manually install them. Choose to Update Driver, then manually add driver. Go to the manufacturer's web site and find your device and download the newest driver for XP. This might work.

If I remember correctly from my XP days, one way I was able to solve this problem was to remove the devices using device manager, then reboot the PC. Quite often the new devices are found and restored. If not you can manually install the device and go to the manufacturer's web site to grab the drivers. This does presuppose you have the make and model of the devices.
