    shortcut icon behaviour

I have a desktop and a laptop, both using Windows 7 Home; a shortcut icon on the desktop has a circular arrow bottom left, but the shortcut on the laptop has a small empty box top left. When I double-left click on the desktop icon the program or file opens, but on the lap top I have to do a single left click on the icon, which puts a tick in the box, then I have to right-click on the icon to bring up a menu box from which I select Open clicking on that opens the program. How can I get shortcuts on the laptop to behave as on the desktop.

In Windows Explorer ([Winkey][E]), press [Alt][T], press [O] ('oh' not zero), press [Ctrl][Tab], use the mouse to scroll all the way to bottom, deselect (untick) the little box next to "Use check boxes to select items", click Apply and then OK.
