excel ghost - cant x out of it - have to ctlaltdel select and end task

    weird bug just started happening

    win98se
whatever excel version was used back then (i think office 97)
    works great
    still works

    BUT
after i save and cancel out of the current file (basically my bank accounts and utility usage logs)
there is an empty excel screen left
    all gray middle
    BUT
no - / boxes / x to select in the corner
i have to go to windows task manager to get rid of it
and then i am back to normal

i guess this could be old age catching up with win98se
but it only happens with excel (so far)
[although i did have one other odd problem when it would not open/save files. that turned out to be too many excel files because i always create a new copy to use next after i save the old one. had to move them to a new folder then excel worked okay again. ]

this pc never goes on the internet so no way it should have any virus
that did not come with it from the store i bought it at
(and none was found before i deleted the virus scanner and no other problems in many years)

anyone got any thoughts about this strange behaviour ??

Assuming you are now using a newer version of Office, wonder what would happen if you saved it as a different version ex. 2003, 2007,2010? You did not state if you had already done this.

    Hi Speedball

If you close the current file and see the Excel "empty excel screen left all gray middle", do you still see the Excel menu???
If so, just select File from the menubar and then select Exit at the bottom (under most recent files list)
This will close the Excel session.

    OKAY
    mystery solved!

somehow the view was changed to full screen
i always use a normal view

    dont know how it happened
but when i discovered it and changed it
    then the ghost problem disappeared

looks like an interaction bug in old microslop coding

    Hi speedball

Top marks for resolving this yourself.
When you identify the unsub* responsible for changing to full screen mode, give them a swift kick in the ..

    No, I don't mean that.
Just tell them not to do it again.

The term UnSub is also know to USA viewers, though the phrase did not really catch on. In fact there was a TV series from 1989 called "Unsub" starring David Soul. It was essentially the TV series CSI though way ahead of its time and it did not survive more than a handful of episodes.

    Hi Steve

Thank you for sharing that about David Soul. For the last few hours I've had 'Don't give up on us baby' in my head and it's driving me nuts.
David became a British citizen in 2004. Can you take him back now please.

If you watch the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ_duzQzS1I you will quickly get Soul's song out of your head, it is the "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" by Leonard Nimoy...

    thanks

i probably fumble fingered some shortcut that turned it on without realising it

usually that happens when the side of my hand leans into teh control key by mistake and then
ctl (next keystroke) does something. usually it is obvious immediately and i can
ctl z or otherwise back out of it. but if it dont see it then it could be hidden and strike later.
