Migrate from Word 2003 to free sw?

I just got a laptop with Win 8. My use of Word 2003 is very minimal, mostly just writing notes and letters to print or reading the Word 2007 documents from my wife to proofread. I then send back the marked up document to her. I will not be buying a new edition of Word for Win 8.

What suggestions for free document software do you have for my simple use. I presume Google and Firefox's group are still avail. but I thought I'd ask for recommendations.

    Thanks in advance.

    Google Docs is good.
LibreOffice is a full (and complex) software suite that is for the most part compatible with MS Office.

    Paul,

I'd give Libre Office (free) a look. It's a full MS Office replacement and will r/w Office document formats. HTH
