Purpose of Microsoft Visual C++ files?

Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (with various years starting in 2005 to 2010)

I have several of these listed in ctrlpnl/programs and features.

They don't take up much room, so it's no biggy, I'd just like to know what they are/do.

    thanks

Google can supply some answers although they might get quite technical.

They are libraries that some of your installed applications need to run. They were added when the applications that need them, were installed.

    Yes. Quite technical.
Couldn't decipher whether I could keep the newer '2010' one (if it were backwards compatible), and eliminate the older versions.

No, you can't do that. Programs needs a specific version.

This is the same as the Net Frameworks. An individual app will need the particular version. Leave them all alone.
