Wuauclt.exe and svchost.exe using up CPU

These two processes are running on my XP SP3 machine and slowing it down significantly. They are each using around 158mb. My CPU is at 100%. Can anyone tell me why these processes are running so high. I understand the first one is a MS update process but I have my updates selected to notify me and not automatically update. Any thoughts? My system has slowed down to a crawl

Change the WU settings (again) and reboot to see if it changes anything.
