XL '97: Current printer is unavailable. Select another printer.

    Win XP s3
I don't know what essential file has been deleted or corrupted to cause the above alert. MS Word in the same version of Office still previews and prints without protest, but Excel refuses to do either. Selecting the alternative "printers" results in the same refusal.

I did use a non-MS spreadsheet (PlanMaker) to print an .XLS file, and wonder whether that caused the problem.
    All help gratefully received!

    Hi

Since you say that Word is using the printer OK, it is unlikely that the printer driver is corrupted.

So it might be that the regional settings for your computer are corrupted.

To reset the regional settings, you need to first select any different setting..
    Start>Settings>Control Panel>Regional Settings
..choose a setting and click OK
    Then restart you computer,
    Then reselect your original setting..
    Start>Settings>Control Panel>Regional Settings
    ..select and click OK
    Then restart you computer

    Try that.

Let us know if this fixes it.

    Hi

Just another thought, before you try the above:
    1. Open the excel file that doesn't print.
    2. Save the excel file.
    3. Now try to print

The reason for this is the undocumented 'feature' of Excel to save the printer data in the excel file.
So it may have been 'adjusted' when you used PlanMaker to print it.
This might have placed an 'incompatible' printer info into the Excel file.

    Thank you, Zeddy:
I altered and reset the regional settings as you prescribed, but still got the same errmess.
The same annoyance afflicted three other spreadsheets. In one case I had to have a print, so I used PlanMaker to get it.
Then I found your later post and tried
    open spreadsheet
    set print area
    save spreadsheet
    exit Excel

    open excel
    open same spreadsheet
select print preview - same errmess
    select print - same errmess
    exit Excel

Then repeated the latter sequence without the preview step.

I suppose I could simply use PlanMaker from now on!

    Hi

Did you try the specific steps in post#3 in the specific order stated??
    ie.
    1. Open the excel file that doesn't print. Don't do anything else yet.
    2. Save the excel file - press [Ctrl][S].
    3. Now try to print

Yes I have gone through your sequence (with saving) with several files, old and new.
But now I'm thinking perhaps you are referring to the very first file that wouldn't print.
Of course I have no idea which file that was.
    All help gratefully received!

Did you try a "Fix" of Excel? I believe fix is under help.
