    Switch to Gmail...Advice Please!!!

    Hi Guys,

I want to convert my Hotmail to Gmail.

I have 4 different email addresses. One with hotmail.com, two with hotmail.co.uk and one with outlook.com.

Each has got hundreds of emails and spesific folder structure.

I would love to import them to gmail with their folder structures.

If you could give me some idea how to go about it please......Thank you.

You can import your messages and contacts by following the instructions here:

I know of no way you can preserve your folder structure though.

    Hi hmmm,

The only way I believe it could be done is to start forwarding your hotmail.com, two with hotmail.co.uk and one with outlook.com to your Gmail.com account.

Now for the tricky bit. I don't know which account you use for high priority / business use, so I will assume it to be hotmail.com.

When you get mail forwarded from Mybank@anyaddress, create a filter for it From Mybank@anyaddress To your hotmail.com account then give it a label for example A1, OR use the 'Categorise as' feature but I have not used it, so can't advise. You can add other mail addresses to A1 using as many as you want.

    Hi hmmm,

Here is some other info for you. Mail Tips.pdf
    -
I have 3 other accounts, hotmail.com, live.co.uk both are forwarded to my Gmail. Gmail checks my aol.com account.
    -
As my pdf states, I only use Windows Live Mail 2012. It gives better reading / sending options than Gmail, but it's not possible to create message rules / filters in the way Gmail does. WLM does not save a copy of sent items (my setting) & I can safely delete all mail in WLM, as Gmail does it for me automatically.

Here's an update to my pdf.
If, as I suggested in my pdf, you decide to keep your Outlook.com account on WLM, it will not receive any messages, but will be able to be selected, to be used to send or reply to any of your messages.

Many people like to get their email via Web mail and never download it into their own computer.

    Personally, I don't like that!
For many years I've used Outlook Express (on Windows XP) to receive up to six email accounts.
On Vista, OE was replaced by Windows Mail. While on W7, Windows Mail is still there, but has been disabled by MS. It can however, be re-enabled and works great. (much like O.E.6)

The default mail client on W7 and W8 is now Windows Live Mail, but I don't like it and I still use Windows Mail (re-activated) whenever possible.

That way, you have ONE address book and you can set up folders for Saved email.
Then that address book and saved mail can be backed up just like any other data file on the PC.
I back mine up daily, with a simple batch file, using XCOPY.

My email client (O.E.6) is set up to check my mail every three minutes on all my email addresses, while my PC is on. That makes responding to important email, a SNAP.

    Cheers mate!

If the OP is still monitoring this thread, this should now be doable because hotmail/outlook.com now has IMAP support.
