A Ubuntu Boot Disk Can Be Very Handy

    Hey Y'all,

I was having a problem today that I finally got fixed thanks to a Ubuntu boot disk.

I was doing file maintenance on a My Book 3Tb external USB 3.0 drive trying to delete some directories and Windows 8 Pro & Win 7 HP both would not let me delete it or open it. Windows kept telling me that the last directory in the tree had an invalid character in the name. I could rename the directory w/o issue but still got the same message.

I tried Chkdisk /f as Admin - No problems it said.
I tried RMDIR /S from the top of the tree & bottom of the tree from a command prompt w/Admin Privleges. Same error msg.
I also renamed (shortened) several intervening folders to make sure the path wasn't too long.
I tried TakeOwnership - No errors but didn't fix the problem either.
I even tried a utility DELLnvFile w/the same results.

Of course I googled and got absolutely no relief.

So I thought where's that Ubuntu boot disk.

    1. Booted it up
    2. Went to the MyBook.
    3. Selected the top level directory I was trying to kill
    4. Right-Click
    5. Selected Remove to Trash
    6. Gone!
    7. Rebooted Windows
    8. Took Ownership of the Linux Trash folder on the drive
    9. Deleted it.
    10. Done!

You may want to keep this for future reference. HTH

You might want to 'check out' the Ultimate Boot CD, which is replete with useful (and some useless!) utilities...

Parted Magic is another cool utility CD and one never has to worry about a novice user accidentally starting an install...though there are plenty of utilities available on the disc to muck it up good.
Sent from Windows ME thru Opera 10.63...just before they crashe
