    startup items all open windows

Something has changed in my Win7 machine. When it starts, windows opens and leaves 11 windows on my desktop. I have used Win7 for years and never had this happen. There must be a setting somewhere that got changed. Any ideas?

There is only one item in the startup folder: ARSCLIP.

    What could be going on?

I followed the "restore previous folder windows at logon" instructions. The option to restore was not checked. In frustration, I resorted to installing an earlier image (made before the problem started). The computer worked okay for a day, but then returned to leaving 13 open windows on my desktop. I suspect that an automatic Windows update may have caused the problem, but my attempts to use system restore to earlier dates failed to solve the problem. I have used Win7 since it was first sold and have not previously had this problem. Does anyone have additional troubleshooting suggestions?

Try a clean boot and see if the problem still exists:

Jerry - Thanks. That looks like a good check. I will give it a try.

I did the clean boot twice. Although the problem did not go away, it reduced the number of open windows to 6. Any other ideas as to how to stop the open windows?

    Are these normal startup items?

Have you used a tool such as Autoruns or WhatInStartup to see what is being started when you boot the PC?

Joe, a clean boot would have included disabling the start up items.

Bob, now would also be a good time to make a Malwarebytes (malwarebytes.org) and adwcleaner (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/) run.

    @Jerry,

I understand what it is supposed to do. I'd still like to see a screenshot of what is in the startup items.

I have run Malwarebytes and CCleaner. The former found something in the registry and removed it. Reboot. Then the same windows were opened. It might help to know that 5 of the windows are spawned from the startup folder:
    textcache
    removedcache
    othercache
    iconcache
    default
The final window is opened in notepad and is arsclip.ini
ARSclip is the clipboard manager that is installed.

When I go to the startup folder by "shell:startup" the folder is empty.

There are many ways to get things to start when you boot other than the startup folder. Please use one of the tools mentioned in post #8 and then post a screenshot of the results.

Those folders all belong to ArsClip: Data locations.

The latest version 4.11 includes "Fix: (Misc) - error message on startup on Win8 and some Win7 systems".

I suggest uninstalling ArsClip to see if the unwanted folder windows on startup go away, and then reinstalling the latest version if you really need it.

    Autoruns screen:

Well, it won't load to this forum. I have a screen shot in both GIF and JPG formats. Neither will upload. The screen simply does not advance.

I uninstalled ARSclip using Revo uninstaller and used the top power option. After that, rebooting produced the same windows. If I look at msconfig, I see two other listings of ARS, but both are for paths that do not exist and both are unchecked so they won't start. I have no idea how to make them vanish, since the paths are not present.

I will try to look for entries in the registry to see if I can find some reason for these paths.
