A Patch Watch August fifth-Thursday update

A Patch Watch August fifth-Thursday update

    By Susan Bradley

Because this is a fifth-Thursday week, we get a break from the Windows Secrets Newsletter but not from patching. I'll do a quick update here and then a normal Patch Watch next week or the week after.

    2859537 - Kernel update

I've seen issues with games/programs and BSODs with this update. Game programs have been fixed, and you should see no problems on that front. However, if you get a client reporting 0xc0000005 application errors, please note this is a sign of pirated software. And if you experience a BSOD, please contact me. I'm not seeing many BSODs. But because I've seen some, I recommend that you hold off installing KB2859537.

    Office 2010 SP2 and SharePoint 2010 SP2

Not ready to advise you to install this update. There was a release of KB2825640 (see note below) which indicates that this August update fixes issues caused by SP2, but it does not detail what these issues are.

Furthermore, the issue with "Error ID 27 Calendar property is missing" is not yet fixed. Therefore, I'm not ready to give the okay to install Office 2010 SP2 or SharePoint 2010 SP2 at this time.

Note: KB2825640 Description of the Office 2010 update: August 27, 2013: This update fixes some issues that occur when you install Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Office 2010. Don't install this one either.

    KB numbers 2803821, 2834902, 4834903, 2834904, 2834905

Bulletin is revised to re-release security update 2803821 for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008; security update 2834902 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003; security update 2834903 for Windows XP; security update 2834904 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003; and security update 2834905 for Windows XP. Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 customers should install the re-released updates.

KB2862768 – Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 update rollup: August 2013

(For Windows 8, Windows RT and Server 2012) This update resolves an issue in which some micro-SD cards are not detected on Windows 8 tablets; it addresses several other issues, as well. A restart is required after installation.

Do not install at this time. I've seen instances of problems following the installation of the August update: you can no longer search for a Windows store app and get to a download location.

No ETA for a fix at this time.
