    Question field cannot be updated

I have a form whose source is a mysql table. The only problem is when I add a record. It properly goes to a new blank record and places the cursor in the first field. When I type the first letter (in this field or any other) I get an error message that says "Field cannot be updated". I click the OK button and then all is fine--it lets me continue to enter information without complaining, and I can save the record. I can edit any existing record in the table without problem. I have tried removing all form event procedures and it still errors. Users of this db can obviously clear the error msg and go on to enter data, but as the programmer, my pride hurts when I put out a messy application. I have spent several days on this and am hoping someone out there may have an idea for me. Thanks!

There is no subform, just a form for adding to and editing table records.
