    AutoText file location (Word2000)

I recently had to reformat my hard drive, but have everything from before in a separate location. I had lots of AutoCorrect and AutoText entries that I would like to recover. Where would that file be, and can I just replace the new install with that?

Your autocorrect entries will probably be in one or more .acl files - search the location where you're storing everything for "*.acl" and you should be able to find these.

Autotexts are stored, by default, in your Normal.dot template, so you should search your storage location for that. The best strategy from that point is to (1) rename this one "OldNormal.dot" (to avoid confusion) and then (2) in Word use the Organizer to copy the Autotext entries from OldNormal.dot to your current new Normal.dot.

    Hi Gary,
Somewhere someone told me that only unformatted autocorrect entries are stored in the ocl file, but that formatted autocorrect entries are stored in Normal. Do you know if this is correct or not?

Considering that you can't view them with organiser I wonder whether that is incorrect.

    Hi Karen,

    That seems to agree with <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wrd&Number=36898&Search =true&Forum=wrd&Words=.acl&Match=And&Searchpage=1& Limit=10&Old=allposts&Main=36734>this post</A> - basically all I know about .acl files are what I got from doing a search here on ".acl"! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Autotext entries are stored in templates, primarily in normal.dot, because that is the default storage location. Autocorrect entries are stored primarily in .acl files (and there may be multiple such files).

See <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/ExportAutocorrect.htm> How can I import and export all my AutoCorrect entries, so they can be transferred to another machine?</A> for more on this (including a macro for editing AutoCorrect entries).

for instructions and information on sharing / copying / moving customizations including macros, AutoText, Toolbars and menus, and key assignments. Follow the links at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#AutoText> Word Web Resources - AutoText (addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm) for more on AutoText.

Formatted autocorrect entries are indeed stored in the normal.dot.

I just looked at the links in your post, and immediately sent them on to some people I know who also use Word. There is some really great info there. I was even able to fix another irritating problem encountered when I had to reformat and reload all my software. Thanks!

    Your are welcome.

BTW, the macro on the AutoCorrect site is the only way I know of to reliably get at the AutoCorrect entries that are saved in normal.dot.
