    PATCH WATCH

Office apps make up the bulk of September fixes

    By Susan Bradley

I hope you're feeling invigorated from a relaxing summer, because September rolls in with a mammoth Patch Tuesday. Along with the usual IE and Flash updates, Microsoft has released a slew of Office security patches, some of which have installation issues.

The full text of this column is posted at windowssecrets.com/patch-watch/office-apps-make-up-the-bulk-of-september-fixes/ (opens in a new window/tab).

Columnists typically cannot reply to comments here, but do incorporate the best tips into future columns.

The Patch day offered the following patches and I installed them::

    KB 2760411
    KB 2760588
    KB 2760583

But today they are offered again for installation... I then restarted the PC and checked again the Windows update function and sure enough, they were offerd again although they are already installed - what to do?

    Regards,

    Robert from Munich, Germany

This is happening to almost everyone with those three. Just hide them.

Known issues with this security update
•You may be repeatedly offered this update even though it is already installed. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

You failed to mention that any of this only applies "while Microsoft Outlook is connected to a Microsoft Exchange server".

Many of us use Outlook at home without an Exchange server ever being connected.

I guess I'm in the minority then as I don't have the problem either on Windows 7 or Windows 8.

But you do have Office 2007 and installed those three updates?

    Office 2010 SP2

Susan please can you let us know, perhaps in your next column, whether Office 2010 SP2 is still on hold, or good to go.

    Many thanks

Still on hold. There is an event log error that shows up. I'll talk about it next PW.

Where are you reading it only impacts Exchange users?

"This update resolves a security vulnerability that could allow remote code execution if a user opens or previews a specially crafted email message while Microsoft Outlook is connected to a Microsoft Exchange server in Online Mode." in the KB it states that up on the top.

Unless I'm blind (which is entirely possible after following all of these patch issues this month...) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...letin/ms13-068 it does not state that in the master bulletin.
