    Unwanted Icon?

I run windows 8 on a Dell PC using a mouse. Recently a little black bordered meter? has appeared in the top left hand part of the screen and I cannot get rid of it. if I click on the blue it display a shorter bar with a corresponding number. I cannot move it, resize it and cannot access the top right hand part of the screen for the close down. It vanishes from time to time but always reappears and I cannot link this to any apparent activity.
Has anyone any ideas of what it is and how I get rid of it? a screenshot is attached.

That is the sound volume level indicator. On my PC that appears when I change my volume, mute or unmute the PC, etc. For example if I press Fn + F2, my PC mutes or unmutes. (On my PC the F2 function key is the mute function)

I wonder if a volume button is stuck on? My laptop has a Vol + and - buttons. Perhaps yours does as well.

Have you tried to reboot your PC since this started?

Thanks - that has pointed me in the right direction. It appears to be when I am using Dragon Naturally Speaking and have the headset plugged into a USB. I still cannot figure out why it suddenly appeared as I have been using the programme for a year and have not altered it. I did reboot the PC and also went back to the last system restore point but the volume indicator always came back although not immediately. Unplugging the headset seems to have removed it.
