CMD 'batch file' no longer performs in Win7 Ultimate (32bit)

For over a year, double clicking 'file.cmd' would trigger the correct response. Now, a double-click merely opens it in a text editor. When I try to change the file association, I find that "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is greyed out, with an indelible/irremovable tick for a text editor. I need two things : 1. How to reverse the greying out and 2. What program to recommend to run the CMD.

Check the COMSPEC environment variable, which should point to c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

"Check the COMSPEC environment variable" was too technical for me to be useful; but it turns out that "should point to c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" is the solution, although I came to it from a different suggestion - by using the CMD patch file from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...s-restore.html Thanks
