facebook virus attack? facebook or infection they have? third party attack ???

went to facebook to consider signing up
    read their disclosures
scared the bejabbers out of me
(at least they were honest about what they would be doing)

    so declined to continue

soon i had MAJOR PROBLEMS with my pc

    IE kept crashing
finally some program said it wanted to restore my active desketop
    I HAD NO ACTIVE DESKTOP
    and dont want active desktop

the screen went white with icons visible
but overlaying a message to restore active desktop that was mostly hidden
clicking on the icon to restore led to a worthless script that hung
until firefox asked if i wanted to stop it

along the way winpatrol had said something was trying to add a new program
i told it to stop that from happening

even after trying all the other fixes i found on the net
from the MANY people who had this same problem
the screen kept being forked although just usable

finally found a NEW file called desktop.htt
    tried to delete
    could not do it

    used file assassin
    and that worked

    rebooted
    pc still a little flaky
but after the next reboot everything is better than it had been before
and has worked fine since i got rid of that unwanted new desktop.htt file

i suspect that facebook put one of those magic pixels on the desktop to try to read/write info to/from my pc using active desktop
and had started before i had accepted their terms of use

there were many files called desktop.htt scattered around my pc (WHY?)
i had to delete the one with the date of teh problem that was new file in the IE folder

replaced it with a very old file just in case

    anyway
    my problem is solved

    but i wonder
was this a facebook attack that went bad

is facebook infected and someone else is attacking via their site

or could something else cause a new program to try to install
that wants to 'fix' my active desktop but flakes out instead
and leaves a hoked up display

    mbam found nothing wrong

all i found was clues from others with the same problem
and getting rid of the .htt file fixed it

Haven't heard of any Facebook interaction with the Windows desktop but the next time you need to repair Desktop.htt see:

Yes. I don't think your problems had anything to do with Facebook.

    bruce,

where do you think active desktop came from then?

    i never had active desktop
why did a new file appear
and why did killing it fix the problem

somebody/something put in a new file and tried to use active desktop on my pc
facebook said they would do things like that

if not them , then very suspiciously coincidental that it started right after going to their site, so who/what would have done it if not their magic pixel program?

    @jwitalka
    thanks
will file that in case it happens again
hopefully since i dont have active desktop it wont happen again if i stay away from facebook

i used *every* type of fix i could find on the net to fix it
(there were about 4 different approaches)
the only one that did work was killing the file completely

This may sound like a stupid question, but are you sure you were at the actual facebook website when you were considering signing up?

Based on what you have said, my guess is that you may have been at some well-crafted site which appeared to be facebook.

I think your question is perfectly justified. I thought the same. No legitimate site downloads files to your computer without your permission and FB certainly does not do it. Also, most FB virus are virus that compromise friends lists, etc, never heard of a similar situation to the one described here.

this may be a stupid answer but i went to facebook.com by typing it into my browser

is that one of the fake sites ?

    it looked very real
full disclosures at which point i decided to quit signing up as i can not accept what they said they would do

it appears as if they had started to do it but did not get to finish when i exited before finishing the sign up

i googled for the symptoms of my problems and found people all over the net with the same issue

they did not say how it happened
but there were lots of solutions that fell into 4 major categories

i tried the 3 easy ones
then finally i deleted the .htt file that was BRAND NEW just after visiting facebook
that one worked once i got file assassin to actually delete the desktop.htt file

somebody tried to start up or use active desktop on my pc
i do not have active desktop

i suspect the people with problems ran into similar problem from some site
they tried to install a magic pixel to help track them as some sort of secret virtual cookie
but it failed because they did not already have active desktop turned on

    cant prove it was facebook
but it happened just after i went there
it could be some other site that i opened up in that general time frame
but facebook had the warning that they were going to do it
which is why i left so they would not do it

really look like they started but did not get to finish

if this were a common attack from many sites i would expect more postings on the net
seems unlikely we all visited the same different site and got attacked

more likely we all visited facebook and got attacked
could facebook have an infection or virus in its site ?
    that is possible too

    maybe nsa ?

this attack could be used by facebook or nsa to do the things you note like take my address book

this is HOW THEY get backdoor access. and they said as much in their disclosures as i read it.

An active desktop warning is not an attack.

What did Facebook tell you about backdoor access?

when my screen flakes out and is hard to read or use
THAT *IS* AN ATTACK BY SOMEONE
apparently trying to sneak in via active desktop as that is the related error messages and fix

    i have not contacted facebook
their page said they would intentionally use magic pixels to see what is in your pc
looks like they started doing it before i said i was NOT going to continue signing up with them

Must be this page, but it only says they can read their own cookies: What are pixel tags ("pixels")? How does Facebook use them?
