    Smile Automatic Updates not installing

I have a queue of downloaded Microsoft updates that simply won't install which I am reminded of daily, as every time I go to power down my computer, I am reminded to Install Updates and Shutdown. This started happening (I believe) last month.

I am running XP Pro SP 3 32-bit

    The updates are:
KB2870699 - Cumulative Security update for IE 8 on Windows XP
    KB951847 - .NET Framework 3.5 SP 1 and "Family"
    KB2844285 - .NET Framework 2.0 SP2
    KB2840628 - .NET Framework 4
KB2864063 - Security Update for Windows XP
KB2876217 - Security Update for Windows XP
KB890830 - Malicious Software Removal tool for Sept. 2013

I've read in the past instructions for cleaning out the cached copies of failed updates, and the times I've used the instructions, it's always cleared out the logjam of patches -- could someone please point me in that direction again?

    Thanks in advance!

To answer your specific question -- how to clean out cached copies of failed updates -- check out either of these links, the 2nd of which (the Microsoft link) will actually run a troubleshooter for you:

    http://rahuldpatel.wordpress.com/200...pdate-failure/
    http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=971058

But if this did start for you last month... you're far from alone... but I thought MS finally fixed it. More info here:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...e-2dd53f7fee72
    http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft...-update-226594

    Lastly, NOTE:
For anyone reading this (like me) who had the problem with *KB951847 reinstalling* (my problem, that brought me here), that started *THIS* month, FYI it is known & reproduced by Microsoft, and they are working on it.

The topic at answers.microsoft.com is named for the update number, rather than the KB#:
    "October 2013 MS Update MS13-082 undoes detect of .NET 3.5 SP1 MS11-100"
    ... and it's at link:

I have now for a couple of months NOT been able to automatically update (using windows updater) the following five (5) files. I note that only one of my files is located within the identical problem you have explained above. I have successfully cleared the cache, but will NOT run Windows Update again until I have received DETAILED instructions of how to resolve this problem once and for good. Any help from anybody would be very much appreciated. Thx. Curt
