    backup help needed

    hello everyone;

i have a desktop [dsk], a netbook [ntb] (both running W7 home premium [w7hp]), and a portable HDD 250 gb, which has three partitions, labeled backup_netbook, backup_desktop and spare (with other personal data).

religioulsy, every sunday at 6am (for dsk), and at 10am (for ntb), w7hp is set to backup (using the w7hp utility) the corresponding machine (where i plugged the usb cable of HDD).

each corresponding backup is set to go the corresponding partition (in HDD) as per my settings.

i want to have the NEW backup files to OVERWRITE the ones from previous week (pls confirm / correct that this i want is called one-way synchronizing).

w7hp is NOT overwriting, what creates a need of space for the new files.

is it there any way to achieve this?

my needs are modest, and i am not interested to spend money buying some MORE complex program intended for enterprises, etc.

any help / suggestion / recommendation(s) will be appreciated.

    TIA.

You might try Macrium Reflect Free edition. I don't use it myself but quite a few Lounge members like it.

I was going to suggest MRF but it doesn't overwrite old ones. You will have to manually delete them, though that can be done in Windows Explorer.

I couldn't find it in the free version, so I assume it's one of the functions free doesn't have compared with Pro.

EaseUs ToDo Backup Free will let you set a schedule and image reserve strategy, whether it's a certain number of days or a certain number of images, including just one with the option to permanently reserve the first image for those who would wish to retain a master image.

    hello everyone,

no, i didn't forget my promes to report results, only that i wanted to see evolution of what i decided to try.
first, i discarded Macrium Reflect because doesn't allow overwriting of backup.
EaseUS Todo Backup proved to be very convenient and friendly.
Given that in (both) desktop and netbook i have partitions (C: for OS and D: for data), i got scheduled Full Disk backup for C:, and only data files backup for D:.
the management image strategy feature allows me to keep them for a week, which is when they are overwritten by the new ones.
    thanks FUN for the recommendation.

I know the OP is now sorted, but I just thought I'd add this for anybody else with similar requirements.

'Belvedere' - a small program which "keeps your desktop or any other folder on your hard drive organized and under control, it's an automated Windows file management tool. Use Belvedere's friendly interface to create advanced rules to move, copy, delete, rename, or open files based on their name, extension, size, creation date, and more".

It's completely free and I can confirm it works great on Windows 7 x64 (I haven't tried it on XP, Vista or 8).
