    'action will reset' msg (xl2000)

Using Excel 2000, I frequently get the message:

"This action will reset your project"

This happens during editing, even when code execution has been halted by the stop button. This doesn't happen in Excel 97. Can anyone tell me why? It gets quite irritating to be adding comments and have this message pop up (not all the time but enough to be a pain).

I can't tell you what causes it, but I can tell you that it isn't unique to Excel 2000. I see it all the time in Access too.

    Deb,

I see this in Word all the time, too.
I think (not sure) that what determines whether or not you see it, is whether the edits you're making require the code to be recompiled in order for execution to continue (as and when you tell it to continue).

If I change a .Font.Size from 12 to 15, that's not going to trigger a reset project prompt, but if I change the name of a variable named sngFontSize to sngNewFontSize, then it will. (that's my theory anyway!<g>)

I have this frequently- though I'm surprised it happens during comments.

    My own thoughts:
. VB/BVA might have a buffer of how much can be added or changed
. There might be a criticality test. Changing something in quotes is non-critical (normally). Adding a static variable is quite critical. Changing a value in a "select case" is critical. Changing variables is perhaps halfway.

I can find very little in the KB though.

There is a setting (in the VBE) under Tools, Options, General tab to Notify before State loss which most likely has a bearing. Quote from the help file :
    <blockquote><hr>Edit and Continue

    Notify Before State Loss

Thanks all for the great responses. It seems there really isn't an official answer. I checked how I have my VBA Options set and I do not have a check next to 'Notify Before State Loss'. I guess it's something we have to live with but something internally must of changed since I don't get this in xl97 when just adding code or comments (which I select a bunch of rows then use the comment block icon in the editor to add ' characters).

I've only seen that message while code is running and has been interupted at, say, a breakpoint, or whilst stepping thru the code, or when DEbug is selected.

If the code is really STOP-ed, then that message should/would not appear.

Re: 'action will reset' msg (xl2000)

Notify Before State Loss is a different critter.
Has noting to do with the "action requested" in this thread.

VBA is an Interpreter. Internally, VBA MUST reset the code under certain conditions.

When you add code, VBA MUST reset internally.
    Comments should be irrelevant.

Ooops, I meant to say "Comments should be irreverent.".
