    3 TB drive limited to 2TB -- solved it myself.

    To use all the space on a disk with more than 2 Gb, you have to convert MBR to GPT in the left panel for the disk (the one that gives the disk number) in Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage (in Windows 7). There's no way to recover the unallocated space above 2 GB in the right-hand panel either as a second partition or by expanding the 2 GB partition without first converting to GPT. This had me flummoxed for a minute.
