Speaker disabled in playing YouTube videos, with either Chrome or Firefox

I'm not getting sound in YouTube videos on a Windows 8 system, in either Chrome or Firefox. The little speaker icon at the bottom of a YouTube video has an x on it, which I can't seem to change, no matter if I right- or left-click on it. I can download the video to my computer, and, in that case, it will play just fine, with VLC, or, presumably, other applications. This seems to affect all YouTube videos. I uninstalled Flash, and installed the latest version, but that didn't help. Thanks for any assistance.

Clear your Google/Youtube cookies. Move the slider, it should then give the appropriate volume. Alternatively, pause the video, right click the X near the speaker symbol and then click the speaker symbol itself. Then restart the video.

This is a known bug on Youtube's side, they seem to have found the cause and are working on fixing it, it could take some time.

Thanks. I'll try that, if I can figure out how to remove Google cookies without some inconvenience.

YouTube doesn't seem to have fixed that yet.
