    error 0x8000ffff in System Restore

I opened my Toshiba laptop this morning and found Windows Update had 23 updates for my computer. I checked the list and found none to skip so I started the download/installation. When it finished I permitted a restart which never completed. I received an error 0x8000ffff. I chose a 'System Restore' option and System Restore returned the same error. "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore.(0x8000ffff)."

Every time I try to start Windows I get the message "Windows failed to start....) and it runs "Startup Repair" again which fails and I run "System Restore" which also fails with the same message. I attempted to run "sfc /scannow" from the DOS prompt but it won't proceed since there is an uncompleted System Restore in progress.

Looks to me like a Catch 22. I would appreciate any assistance on this.

I would try booting into safe mode then opening an elevated command prompt and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. This utility might find and fix any system files that were damaged.

    See:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2695585

It suggests trying a different System Restore point as well as a hotfix.

I have tried all four available System Restore points and receive the same error message - "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore.(0x8000ffff)."

As I said in my post, "I attempted to run "sfc /scannow" from the DOS prompt but it won't proceed since there is an uncompleted System Restore in progress."

I cannot boot in Safe Mode; the F8 key has no effect on the boot sequence.

I will try the kb2695585 suggestion (looks quite involved).

    Edit:
I tried do the kb2695585 suggestion but the Windows Automated Installation Kit must be installed before this situation occurs and I cannot install it on the laptop because it won't boot up.

    Edit:
It's working! I ran "Startup Repair" in Safe Mode (had to hold down the F8 key) and it has now booted up. It somehow completed the System Restore. Now I just have to do the Windows updates one at a time to find out which one caused the original trouble. Think I'll do an image of my C: drive first.
