justifying text in a merged cell in a table

    Hi Loungers

I am writing a newsletter and I want to have a table of content.

This table of content is going to be on the first page of the newsletter, where we have a table of 2 columns by 2 rows, one for the editor's message and one for the president's message. I want to use the remaining space in the remaining cells for the table of content, but I want to have it justified in each cell or justified in the merged cell?

How do I set the justification in a table?

    Thanks

A TOC won't split itself across multiple table cells. Despite calling it a TABLE of contents, it is not usually put in a table at all.

When you talk about justified are you talking vertical or horizontal justification?

    Thanks Andrew

Yes I agree that the setup is not the ideal, but this is what I inherited.

I have one of two options:

    1) Make each row in each column of different width, and I don't even know if this is even possible. So if the president's message is 50 words long, and it will consume an inch on paper, we would hope that the editor's message is also 50 words. But what if its 250, and it will need 3 inches on paper.

There is no way that I know about to make each cell the needed width.

    So

    2) Merge the two bottom cells and use that space to make a table of contents that I will type up character by character and format the text myself, and then justify the text so that there is enough space on both left and right. I only need this to make it look nice, if its too difficult then forget about it.

    Thanks

I'd suggest inserting the TOC outside the table (or into a full-width table cell of its own), above or below the president/editor messages, which can indeed be in the table described. Once you have both messages, simply drag the column border that separates them to the left or right to balance the # of lines used (within reason). If the row height for the messages is set to 'automatic', you won't need to adjust that also.
