    Chrome New Instance Pops-Up

    Greetings (as my draft board said to me 69 years ago),

    On 10-17-13 I was downloading a few utilities using Chrome. Each time I used a Google-Search link. I arrived at where I was going, but a small Chrome window appeared offering an unrelated download. All offers looked legitimate. The first was for Quick Note extension to Chrome. I have seen Quick Note as an Android App. I believe that, somehow, I clicked something in passing, and Quick Note installed itself. It also tried to hijack my homepage settings, managing to mix its offered home page with mine so that neither was successful.
    Twice more these extra, free-standing Pop-Up Chrome windows appeared. I dispatched them harmlessly (first with Task Manager, then with upper right X).
    I gave the date above because I think that the start of this mischief was that date, or close.
    I find that I don't have a PopUp blocker running with Chrome. What I saw was not quite a PopUp.

    Thanks for reading. Harry

    Cool

    Try installing Adblock plus for chrome then installing and running malwarebytes free and running a full scan. It sounds like you may have installed a malware Trojan which Malwarebytes is very good at removing.

    Clive,

    Thanks.

    The malware slipped by AdBlock Plus.

    Malwarebytes detected 3 problems. They were located in downloads/GraphicAids. The names started with 'SoftonicDownloader'. Each was an exe. They were classed as PUP.Optional.Softonic.A (Potentially Unwanted Program). They were for:
    * fotosketcher
    * lossless-rotator
    * photofiltre

    Searches found Softonic.H villains, and a connection to 4Share (a file sharing site).

    Thanks again, Harry
