Doc Var in Header (Word 97SR2)

Does anyone know if Microsoft ever produced a fix for the well-known Word 97 "Assigning a value to a document variable in a header will crash Word" bug?

I know the standard answer: "Yes, it's call Word 2000." What I mean is a Word 97 SR2b, c d or whatever fix.

I can find nothing but maybe a guru or two knows something.

I don't think they intend to do anything about it.

I'm running my Word 97 with SR1, SR2 and the "leap year fix."
