Repair Caption numbering (Word 97 SR@)

I had a document with the tables and figures nicely numbered as 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, etc. Somehow, in the process of pasting in some additions, I blew the numbering. Now the sequence numbers are only odd numbers (5-1, 5-3, 5-5, 5-7, etc.) If I go to the insert cross reference table, each caption is listed twice, but only with odd numbers (Figure 5-1, Figure 5-1, Figure 5-3, Figure 5-3, etc)

I can't seem to remove the duplicate entries from the cross reference table or repair the sequencing. Is there any way to fix this other than just giving up on Word and manually numbering the captions and cross references?

    Hi kaptdan:

I'm not sure what happened, but have you tried selecting everything (Ctrl+A) & then updating the fields (F9).

If that doesn't work, press Alt+F9 so that you can see the field codes. See if there's any switches in the codes that might cause the numbering to start with 5 & to increase in multiples of 2.
