Data type - Lookup wizard (Access 2000)

    Hi,

It is probably a simple question - What data type do I use if I want to create a lookup field in a table, that you can choose from the list and also add to it - from the datasheet view. At the moment I am using a look up field and am able to choose from the list but I can't add to it.

    Thanks Kindly,

By a lookup field, do you mean a combobox that allows you to see a list of values in that field or one that shows you a list of values from another table? The datatype of the field has to agree with whatever you're storing in the field. It does *not* have to agree with what you're displaying in the combobox.

If you explain in more detail what you're trying to do, I know that someone will be able to help you.

    Hi Charlotte,

Currently, I have setup a table and have a field called "Department" and the data type is Look-up. I am looking up the values in another table. What I am trying to do is setup the "Department" field so that you can lookup fields from another table and also add extra data via the department field and its will place it in the other table.
What is happening at the moment, I can choose from the list however if I have to add a new dept, I have to open the other table and add it, I want to add it through the first table.

    Hope that explains more.....

    Thanks

There is no such datatype as "lookup". What you're doing is creating an implied connection to the other table by creating a lookup against it. The datatype is probably Text.

You just provided a good example of the reason for using forms instead of working directly in tables. You can't do what you want to do from a table, but you can use a combobox's NotInList event from a form to run code that inserts a record into the other table. For details, try doing a Lounge Search on NotInList
