Word 2000 crashes on close (SR-1)

Just today (after working without a hitch forever), Word would open less than maximized in normal view instead of page layout full screen. Then, if I try to close Word 2000, it generates an error and is shutdown by the OS (Win 2000 SP-2). I have tried ot repair/re-install Word 2000, but part way through get the following :

Error 1931. The windows installer cannot update the system file crogram
filescommon filesmicrosoftsharedvgxvgx.dll because the file is protected
by windows. You may need to update your operating system for this program
    to operate properly.

This one has me stumped. This is not the same issue in a thread re crash on save. This one crashes if you try to exit the program. Help???? Nothing material has change don the system and all was fine yesterday!

I also have the same problem using the same system. Win 2k Pro with SP2 and word 2000 with Sp1. When I close Word, it crashes. This is a real pain, especially if I change setting in the program, it won't keep them when it crashes on shut down. Does *anyone* have any ideas??

    Many thanks.

Re: Word 2000 crashes on close (SR-1)

I was able to fix the bug re "Detect and Repair" (IE5.5 breaks detect and repair) by getting Microsoft to email me the hot fix. So now I have been able to "detect and repair", repair and reinstall Word 2000 still to no avail. If I try to exit the program, I get the error message. Same thing with Excel. All was fine until about a week ago and I don't have a clue as to what is causing the bug. It's not the normal template as I tried deleting it. If I start Word 2000 with the "/a" switch, the bug disappears which tells me it some corrupted file.

    Chuck,

Do you happen to have any global templates or add-ins running? (Can check this in Word by going to Tools > Templates and Add-Ins and look in the list for global templates.) - Possibly some third-party add-in has got some code in it that's causing a problem. (Although I'm not sure how that would be affecting Excel as well...).

Hi Chuck, the following link may be of some help:
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.winsyslog.com/en/FAQ/setup-error-1931-windows-xp-whistler.asp>http://www.winsyslog.com/en/FAQ/setup-erro...xp-whistler.asp</A> and also found this tidbit: <blockquote><hr>"During the FaxControl installation on Windows 2000 machines that do not have the Service Pack 1, an error message that says it is not possible to update the file:

Actually we may be getting closer on this--Adobe Acrobat 5.0 installs pdf.dot into Word and Excel. There are a number of templates running in Word, among which is pdf.dot. By closing down each of those (unchecking the box in tempates and add-ins) one by one and clicking "ok", when I unchecked pdfmaker.dot and clicked ok, it crashed Word. Maybe we now have a clue as to what is going on. I will check the Adobe Knowledge Base on this one.

Re: Word 2000 crashes on close (SR-1)

    Hi Chuck:
In Win98 anyway, there are two common places for addins:

    C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftAddIns
    C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeAddins

Since you said you don't get the problem when you start Word with the a switch, but renaming normal.dot doesn't help, it does sound like an addin, as Gary said. Since the problem happens with Excel, too, it sounds like an Office addin. I'd go to the two locations above & take everything out. If that solves the problem, put them back 1 at a time until the problem reappears.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Word 2000 crashes on close (SR-1)

I found the answer!! The error is caused by a conflict between Norton Anti-Virus Office plug-in and the Adobe Acrobat 5 PDFMaker macro template files. If you have Acrobat 5 (which I do) and you are using the PDFMaker macros (I was/am) then you can either move the PDFMaker macro template file out of the startup folder or disable the NAV Office plug-in (which I did). Excel and Word no work properly. See the following links:

Rats! You beat me to it! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> By chance I discovered that as well. I upgraded Money and it installed IE 5.5, that messed up Norton AV (which I still haven't been able to fix... any help would be appreciated). It keeps giving me scripting errors when I am going through the Configuration Wizzard. Tried everything on Norton and MS, but nothing worked. So if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.
Anyway, since I don't have Norton AV installed (am still using Norton Internet Security) Word hasn't had any more problems.
